I did a little research to find that this is a pretty popular subject for artists. Also a popular metaphor for today's politics. When I was a kid I saw an episode of the muppet show and George Burns was the guest. It opened with "Tonight: Gonzo plays the fiddle while George Burns!" and I thought that was the funniest thing, but only recently did I catch the fact that it was a reference to Nero.
"What an artist dies in me" were supposedly his last words before he slashed his own throat as the people stormed his palace (which, by the way, was built in the heart of rome in the area where this very fire had taken place. Many believe it was nero who engineered the fire in the first place. talk about a DICK!).
Bla bla bla who cares
18x24 ink, brush, pen, stamp, Stereolab No Ref, especially on the lyre, which is totally made up and if you want to tell me its inaccurate, take a breath and smile.
* I would love to get my hands on a large scanner to get an actual clear image of this one, but for now I'll have to settle for this crappy cleaned up photo.
